Skip is a smart, affectionate, and energetic boy who loves being part of the family. He’s incredibly personable, makes wonderful eye contact, and seems to really connect with everyone. While he has plenty of energy and enjoys walks, running, and outdoor adventures, Skip has a great off-switch. Once his exercise and mental stimulation needs are met, he settles beautifully and is happy to relax with his foster family.
Skip is house trained, good in the home, and does well when left alone, with no significant separation anxiety. He’s also been wonderful with our 7- and 10-year-old boys and enjoys spending time with them. He seems particularly careful around our youngest, but we still supervise their time together. He doesn’t beg or try to take food at the table. He likes to know where everyone is and might wander around making some sounds until he figures that out. He's still learning what he should and shouldn’t chew, so it's best to put shoes away and have some safe chew toys available. He is a strong chewer and has even torn a large dog tug toy!
He’s great in the car and is food-motivated, intelligent, and eager to learn. He already knows sit and down and responds very well to positive reinforcement. He does also jump up and become mouthy or nip when overly excited, so continued training and consistent boundaries will be important.
Skip was nervous about his bath at first but with some time and treats he got into the tub himself. When he got nervous, we stopped and let him settle before continuing. We were able to soap and rinse him twice and he did really well. He shed a ton of loose hair afterward but thankfully much less since!
Outside, Skip is more excitable and alert. He is quite strong and can pull on leash. He is often excited by dogs, squirrels and bunnies, especially at dusk. He can sometimes bark at dogs that get him excited and particularly dogs that bark at him first. He has, however, made great progress with redirection and creating distance. Giving him some space and doing a 180-degree turn works well. He's very fit and really seems to want to stay with you while out on walks. He's also surprisingly good at keeping track of his leash and rarely gets tangled around trees or posts. Partway through or near the end of a walk Skip likes to flop down on the grass and roll around.
Skip has not been tested with cats, but he has shown interest in chasing stray cats outdoors. We also haven't had enough controlled interaction with other dogs to know how he would do living with one. He has barked quite a bit at some dogs and it can seem defensive. This has improved a lot and he often ignores smaller dogs. I would still monitor his interactions with other dogs carefully.
Skip is looking for an active home that will give him plenty of love, exercise, and enrichment. Somone who is comfortable with a strong dog and willing to continue working on leash skills and excitement management. In return, you'll get a loving, goofy, intelligent companion who is happiest when he's right by your side.
