🪄 Meet Salem
This beautiful girl will steal your heart the moment you look at her. She has the most soulful eyes and a gentle demeanor — it’s impossible not to fall in love.
Salem is a true story of resilience. She came into care completely shut down and paralyzed with fear, but in a short time has blossomed into a sweet, bubbly, playful dog.
It’s clear she’s had a rough past before coming to Alberta — she still has some weight to gain, confidence to build, and socialization to catch up on — but she’s improving immensely by the day. We suspect she’s lived in tough conditions where resources were scarce and safety wasn’t always guaranteed.
Salem is best suited as an only dog, as she can resource guard her crate, bed, and the few things she’s come to see as hers. She has never guarded against humans, only other dogs.
🐾 Personality & Behavior
With that out of the way — Salem is otherwise an incredible dog. She shows no signs of separation anxiety, sleeps soundly through the night in her crate, and has been quiet and well-mannered in the home. She loves squeaky toys and hasn’t had a single accident in the house. Because of this, we feel she’d do well in a variety of homes, including condo living.
Some dogs with uncertain pasts can be fearful of people, especially men — but that’s not the case with Salem. In fact, she seems to prefer men, adoring her foster dad and melting into her foster grandpa’s lap upon first meeting.
She’s untested with children but would likely do best in a home with older kids, as she can be a little skittish around loud noises.
Despite her resource-guarding tendencies indoors, Salem walks beautifully with her foster family’s pack after slow introductions. Outside, she feels like a different dog — relaxed, happy, and even playful with other dogs. She does not appear leash-reactive.
For a California girl, Salem doesn’t mind the cold! She’ll need a jacket due to her size but happily goes out for walks or potty breaks rain or shine.
She’s untested with cats but does not show a strong prey drive.
