Alanis is a beautiful, silly, smart little sweetheart! We have been working on learning basic commands, and have seen quick progress on “sit”, “leave it”, “no”, “wait”, “go" and “come”. Alanis requires plenty of exercise - we currently go for two walks a day, averaging about 6 km each walk, and we have several play sessions in the backyard throughout the day. She will come home from a 6 km walk and have the zoomies all over the yard for another 30 minutes! She also requires mental exercise, so snuffle mats, kong popsicles, and treat balls are a must for this girl. With her mind and body tired out, she has not chewed anything that isn’t hers and she’s never had an accident! She is slowly learning that her crate is her safe space, but she will still break out if left alone during the day. We zip tie the door shut, because she can open the latches (very smart girl!). At night, she will sleep in her crate without complaint, no zip ties required! She would also love to sleep in a bedroom with her people, though she has never attempted to jump up onto any of our furniture.
Her leash manners have improved exponentially, with her learning to stay on the right and following commands to wait or leave it. Alanis will pull without a confident handler, and she is very strong with a strong prey drive for birds and squirrels. She LOVES other dogs, so we have been working on learning that you can’t say hi to every single dog you see. She does well when she is made to sit and wait for permission to interact, or to just wait for the other dog(s) to pass, but if she is walking by, she will do her best to drag her handler over to say hello. We use a hands-free leash because it gives me more control over her, though she would likely benefit from a sidekick leash system or gentle leader. She plays well, but her energy can be a little much for some dogs, and she is a bit shy of larger dogs sometimes. She loves the little guys!
Alanis has been great with our three children, ages 6, 13, and 14, though she will hop around when she’s excited and isn’t totally aware of where she is. She also mouths peoples hands - she will run up beside or behind us and put our fingers and hands in her mouth, though she is never rough and we are working on redirecting her, this is a learning process for sure.
