Meet Kai!

Kai has been a pleasure to have as a foster and has a very fun/quirky personality. He loves being with his people at all times, and we call him the ultimate surveillance system since he always has to run to see what’s going on if he hears a sound elsewhere in the house. He will do well in a home that allows him to go wherever he wants, since the only time he really displays signs of distress is if he knows someone is in a room but he is locked out. He loves being in contact with his people, whether that’s laying across their lap, presenting his head to be pet, or grunting as he burrows his head in under your arms to hang out for a while. He also loves his rope toys, playing fetch, and running in ultra-zoomie circles in the back yard when it has just snowed. He loves to burrow in under your arms if you’re on the couch, and his favourite two things in the world are head scratches and treats.

When left alone, he generally just goes to sleep on his bed. He didn’t like his crate at first, but now will go in just to nap during the day. His accidents in the house are minimal now, only when he gets super excited, and he can be left alone for long periods without chewing anything or using the floor as a bathroom. He only barks (or howls!) when he’s not able to access his dog, although His energy level alone is low-medium, with occasional high energy bursts when playing (a couple times a day). He is getting better at walking on leash, but still does have a tendency to pull, especially if he missed a walk the day before.

As mentioned above, he doesn’t have any separation anxiety but he does like to be able to access his people when they are home. As far as behavioural traits that will require some work, he continues with what I consider to be minor resource guarding when it comes to *found* food. He has no issues with me taking his bowl of food/water, toys, or anything else, but when food drops to the floor, he grabs it and runs and gets defensive if you try to take it in that he will growl, but has not displayed any other outward aggression. This behavior is getting better, but will still be a work in progress. He used to try and grab food off the tables if it was unattended, but this behaviour is much better now that he realizes it’s not his if it’s on there, and his food will come.

For play time, he likes to be moving around and jumping around but doesn’t often remember his own strength. He can be a bit mouthy when he plays rough and sometimes forgets his own strength, so you should monitor if small children are going to play with him as he may knock them over (we haven’t crossed this bridge yet, more so just insight from his current behaviour). He has gotten along well with the other dogs we’ve had over to meet him though he does tend to play rough with them too, so if there are other dogs in the house, that may be something to keep in mind too.

Overall, his ideal home would be a place where he can get lots of attention and a place that can be patient with him in regards to training him around found food. He is very playful and attention-seeking, so a place that can provide that for him would be great! The only real behavioural traits to work on will be the resource guarding with found food and the leash pulling, but otherwise he has learned very quickly and provided all sorts of funny moments for us.
