Vernon is such a sweet and loving dog. He can be a bit shy at first, but once he warms up to you he is very cuddly and just wants to be your buddy. He's laidback and would enjoy an easy-going home. Vernon would also be best suited for an experienced owner and as the only dog in the house, as he has shown some resource guarding behaviour towards other dogs, mainly of toys. He listens very well though and is a very quick learner so we believe he can improve in this area with proper training. We have met a few medium/large dogs and he was very good with them. We have not met any small dogs yet, so we are unsure how he is with them. He plays nicely with our high-energy, 2-year-old dog and is very patient. He is also from a shelter in California where they used him for mentoring other dogs. Vernon walks well on-leash and is responding well to learning to heel. Vernon has developed stranger danger with people coming into his house and is displaying fearful reactivity because of it. Vernon will need a strong and confident handler who is comitted and experienced and willing to work with a BARCS trainer to help him overcome this fearful behaviour. He does not bark very often, and he listens when told to stop. We have not experienced him around children, but we think he would do better with older children as they would be calmer and gentler with him. He is not destructive around the house and sleeps through the night. Vernon seems to be a true loyal companion who just needs a permanent, laidback home.
Do they bark: Occasionally but listens when told to stop.

Are they good in the car: Yes
